For what it's worth I'm thinking the mom told John about her mother abandoning her at 12 years old ..same age as John almost. Maybe we he wanted to see how he would handle it. If you there her husband asks her "what did you tell him?". The rest makes no sense...lousy ending...probably the worst I've seen to a movie.
