Terrific movie! I first saw it many years ago when I was little and I enjoyed it but wasn’t mature enough to fully understand it. I just rewatched it and it actually made me cry. Sometimes we forget that the German people were just as much the victims of the Nazis as the people they waged war against. I was particularly distressed because of how close this story hit to home. As the descendant of Holocaust survivors, I couldn’t help the constant feeling that if I were in this movie, my position would be the same as Max’s and likely worse. It made it all feel very real to me, and the dedicated and tearjerking performances, particularly of Liesel and Hans, captivated me from start to finish.
