Some characters were lackluster, but mean well and serve their purpose (the Thorndyke family uses their wealth and resources for the show's "Deus Ex Machina" element, and Chris is the blank slate for the human audience to project themselves to. ) My favorite part of the show was everyone's ability to grow and mature. The adaptations of their most famous arcs (the Shadow Saga, for instance) are well thought out and are quite faithful to the source material.
