The single biggest thing that bothered me about this version of the movie, besides the ending which is nothing like the book, is the fact that to me the central focus of the original story was Ben coming back to Salems Lot yes to write a book but more so how the Marsten House affects the entire town and has been doing so for decades. It is the central focus of the storyline, can a house attract evil men, did it draw men like Hubie Marsten and Barlow to this town, or is something else at work here. To me the whole novel of Salems Lot revolves around this house that sits atop a hill overlooking the town, you can see it from anywhere in town, and yet there’s barely any mention of it or the connection to Ben, the town, or even Barlow/Straker in the entire movie. And I wholeheartedly agree with other reviewers who said basically you can have all the latest and greatest special effects and CGI available but without a good story it falls flat.
