Wish Review - - 2.5 out of 5
The movie Wish was supposed to be the greatest movie of the century— considering that it was created to celebrate Disneys' 100th year. It had good songs, not incredibly amazing but they were pretty okay. The animation was also nice, I liked the stylization of the characters. I have a lot of criticisms though. First off- Asha’s father’s death was never explained or introspected on. The movie simply skipped over the fact that he died, without a reason. I believe that the writers should’ve had a good intimate moment between Asha and her Dad when he was alive; when she was young. There are a few ideas that could’ve been at the start. Like starting off the movie similarly to Tangled, since this movie is technically a throwback to Disneys' greatest creations. Like maybe Asha’s hair used to be braided by her father, showing the two’s connection with one another. After his death, she needed to learn how to braid her own hair to show her independence at a young age. Another thing- Asha’s personality was the usual “Adorkable” which was just a static personality, the same as the other princesses in these past 10 years. Asha was basically the same as Moana except with freckles and braids. I personally think she could’ve had a more confident, calm feeling. The movie would benefit from some extra time to flesh out the characters and show their connection and relation with each other. Magnifico has no need for more power because he’s the king. If he started out as a power-hungry civilian who wanted to be the king, it would be so much more interesting to watch him manipulate the masses to obtain power. The Disney company is failing because they don’t have any fresh ideas from new workers. The same CEOs are dictating the freedom and passion that’s required to make a good movie, focusing on money instead of making a real movie. Wish’s songs are mediocre at best and need new songwriters who aren’t using the tried and true methods of making a musical movie. Valentino, do I have a lot to say about him. His voice actor, Alan Tudyk, is not the problem but everything else about his character is flawed. Instead of being the cheap animal sidekick that has been used in Disney movies since the earliest times for Disney, he could be a second father figure to Asha instead of her grandpa. Part of the opening flashback could be of a young Asha finding a baby Valentino in the forest while she’s playing around. If he was more grounded and advisory instead of being childish like Star, then it would be a nice contrast between the two. Either that or keep his age as three weeks old and use a different voice actor who sounds more naive like Flounder from The Little Mermaid. An overall worse than mid film that had no business entering theaters and charging money to watch a disappointment that had so much potential.
