Stodgy plot. Unnecessarily violent. Waste of time.

I really hope the book is better than the film. So much doesn't make sense about this vapid mother and son who will not rather than can not adapt. If you land on your feet with nothing don't you go about using your skills for survival? Get the son to work? Use her contacts and beauty to gain useful connections for some sort of work? Also the heroine would never have made it into the river. She would have broken something trying to walk the cobblestoned street in those sky high stilettos!
