Watching this in 2020 again after seeing this in 1999. This movie seems to contain every social trope we are experiencing now. From communism and capitalism, gender rolls, social status, mental and physical abuse, and racism. A dichotomous duo is stranded on a Mediterranean island. They are basically east meets west in the extreme from gender, race, politics and social status. It was a good movie, I'll watch it again someday.

Seeing this movie on VHS as a 23 year old I can remember feeling jarred out of the movie over some of the props. Like the "Gibson computer" with its keyboard made for giants. Or the eyepiece Dade suddenly shows up with at the end of the movie. Re watching it today makes my heart hurt for those days. It's nostalgia factor is off the charts. It has a great soundtrack and the movie is full of that 1994 vibe. Had this movie waited to be filmed in 1995 after the Windows 95 release it would have been a bigger hit. Filmed in 94 caused it to miss the whole Windows/AOL event that's lacking in the movie. The release of win95 opened the world up for the vast majority as well as the herculean price drops in computers. Teamed with AOL the stage was set for an epic movie with a fresh and new enthusiastic audience that could have related widely with their own personal experience. But it wasn't meant to be. Hackers is a 10+/10 for its nostalgic factor. Remember roller blades, beepers, dial up modems, Pre-Pentium 86 series computers with 14" monitors, big thick laptops, payphones and the absence of people staring into the palm of their hands? And of course Marc Anthony playing a secret service agent posing as a teen checking out minors in a very creepy way. I remember asking myself "who is he and why does he look familiar?" The plot for this movie doesn't really matter, it could have been anything. What drives this movie is the young actors interacting with each other and reacting to everything as young people do. Worth seeing if you're old enough to have missed it in theaters.
