I was deeply affected by The Unforgettable Fire. Every song seemed soulful and deep and the vocals touched me. Same with Joshua Tree. I met a fellow who also loved these two albums and we joyfully shared our perspectives. He played bass guitar in a Grunge band, and I am a lawyer with 40+ years of experience, so, if anything, so far, this narrative shows that U2 can appeal to a wide variety of folks. I also know that U2 doesn't need time to grow on me; that band immediately stuns my attention.
Not so with Atchung Baby! It just failed to hit. Soul was not in it's make up. It seemed empty of depth. It wasn't enough that the vocals sought to inject feeling. The vocals were spot on U2 characteristics. but it just wasn't enough.
The first two albums definitely made me a U2 fan, and I'm hoping Achtung Baby! is a mere aberration from the norm and that they will be back.
