First published in serial form in 1860 Great Expectations, from the pen of Charles Dickens, gave us an insight into life at that time.I first read the novel when I was about12 years old and in the subsequent 60 years have probably read it a dozen more times. I have enjoyed several adaptations on screen and eagerly awaited the latest. What a disappointment, from the very beginning when the main character was introduced as Philip Gargery and not as Philip Pirrip I realised that there would be much change to the story.....and there was, many of which were irrelevant . Not for me I'm afraid.
