This movie is a masterpiece. The bad reception makes sense given I see a lot of dudes saying it’s trying to be too artsy because of the musical aspect and saying it doesn’t make sense. I’m not the biggest fan of musicals myself so I get it to an extent, but to say it’s unnecessary is wrong I think.
First off because the musical aspects of the movie are a lot of the times a portrayal of Arthur’s disconnection with reality and how he uses this to cope with stressful situations. He is in a trial so yeah, my boy is gonna be stressed. People also say that the musical aspect ruins the gritty, dark, and serious tone that the first Joker had. But the first Joker had moments that broke that mood too, it was supposed to be like a comedic tragedy. “That’s Life” is one of the themes of these two movies and it’s an upbeat song, about the sad realities of life sometimes. I personally think it made this movie a lot darker. Seeing how he creates this fantasy world in his head to cope with the horrible neglect of him by society, his mother, the system, etc. it’s sad. Plus, the musical parts worked as a good intermission between the trial procedure because it gets so intense I felt like I definitely needed some sort of break because I felt as if I was witnessing this damn trial in real time. I was so fucking hyped throughout the entirety of this movie I actually cannot believe how someone can find this boring.
I’ll end this by just saying, basically, how you feel about this finale is a reflection of who you are as an individual and society as a whole. And the reception that this movie got ironically proves the point of the movie right, That all you cared about was entertainment. Nobody cares about Arthur Fleck, the person.
