I guess the 1-star reviewers missed the metaphor about counting cards in the game of life, and seeking justice to cleanse the soul / whatever. Counting cards, keeping track of who does what.
I enjoy that the arrogant loser kid is in fact unredeemable, and is an arrogant loser despite such generosity from the card man. How many 20-somethings do I know like this? Can not follow directions, can not forgive, small-mind dull-witted closed-in, no sense of opportunity. Maybe this character is even more damaged as a person than PTSD man.
I think the La Linda character was emotionally flat on purpose in that she is a prop character and does not pollute or detract from the main emotion of the story, which is the slow churn toward the war based conclusion.
Kudos for obvious real hatred for school debt and debt in general.
Kudos for realism. Yes the card tournaments are dead and boring, just like the real people in the USA who allow war crimes and never say a word or give it a second thought. Soul-dead, brain-dead USians, you got them here.
I like the film a lot, and yes it is definitely not for everyone, especially those whose brains are trained to expect mindless action, and who think it is fun to go to the outlet mall and do a consumer ritual to buy something. This film is not for you. Whoever made this film, thank you. At least they made something, unlike the complaining reviews here from people who make nothing, just mindlessly consume and expect.
DaFoe was brilliant. Thank you. His endorsement alone should tell you about the legitimacy of this movie. There may be an issue with false advertising if the movie is cynically promoted as a card tournament movie. Well, desperate measures for desperate times.
In case anyone missed it, the Russian "USA! USA!" card team is a side-show harassment to demonstrate how mindless nationalism works and is exploited.
