Toast is a well acted, tragic biography, with very few laughs. I don't know why it would be advertised as a comedy because nothing about the story is funny or even amusing. What about child abuse (emotional and sometimes physical) is funny? If you go into the film as I did thinking that it would be a light hearted foodie tale about how Nigel Slater discovered his love of cooking (with some zany competition from his Step-Mum) and began his career at the Savoy, you'll be disappointed. Instead its a dark story of loss, abuse and rejection by both his father and psychotically competitve step-mum. It's a marvel that Slater as a child had the resilience to cling to his dream of being a chef.
