It was pedantically long, excruciatingly so. The story could have been told in 40 episodes or less. I keep hearing about the "amazing" acting by the lead actor, but his overacting and constant mincing cutesy facial contortions were painful. There was a type of flippancy regarding his attitude that was hard to overlook. You did not feel he was the emperor, he was the actor playing the emperor. Just think what depth a Wallace Huo or Mark Chao in that role could have had. There's no doubt the guy worked hard, he just worked too hard and so felt, at times, he was making a joke of his character..
Ni Ni's acting is natural and sincere and it was rare to see her break from her character, unlike her co star.
Cinematography was nice but can't carry it due to being over written and over acted. Who knows maybe after seventy episodes it got a bit hard for anyone to take seriously.
Honorable mention for Xin Ziyan, Gu Nanyi roles.
Bottom line: meh. Overly long and pretentious, could have been great, but wasn't. 7.5/10
