I read about 3/4ths of the way through this book until I had to stop. I cannot bring myself to pick it back up out of the sheer shock I experienced during a particular scene, causing nausea. I assure anyone that reads this that I am not squeamish.
The book has a lot of commentary on gender in terms of it being seen as a duality. Men on one side, women on the other. This book talks a lot about how society views women, what women put up with, and talks a fair bit about sacrifices women make for men. It's a really interesting read when you read beyond the story.
Even the part I was shocked by was another example of sacrifices made by women. It amazes me people dislike the book as it has a lot of great commentary and talks about all that goes wrong as an apocalypse unfolds.
