DV happens behind closed doors.. That's why its hard to leave, its hard to tell people and its why its hard to prove ..as we see in the initial court scene....i love how this portrays a mother's instinct and love towards her child..the scene where Maddy’s toy has been trashed and she stops off at a garage and spends her last dollar on a new one.. Yes Alex does some dumb stuff as other reviewers have said ( stealing from her cleaning jobs, the Tinder date in the house she is cleaning ect, but leaving in the middle of the night isn't one of them. ..Sean is a little too honest to be true towards the end but once you realize the way Alex has been bought up, with a narcissistic alcoholic Dad who hit her mum and a mum whose got some serious MH issues and living in her car and unable to break co-dependent relationships you start to see the reason why it's so hard for Alex and we see her shine. She is tough and determined and this series paints the very real difficulty that women face when they are in a DV situation. 1) it's hard to realize that emotional abuse is DV and it's so hard to leave with a child 2) you endanger your self and your child by leaving as you have nowhere to go 3) the system does not make it any easier and you can go round in circles for a long time. The portrayal of PTSD in the cupboard and tunnel room and sinking into the couch scenes is brilliant. The women in the Shelter and the feeling of freedom and healing that happens there ( the abundant my little pony scene for Maddy, is gorgeous) and the writing workshop towards the end is fantastic. I love that Alex does finally heal and get out of there and we see a strong young woman by the end of the series who has risen against all odds ..M is for Maddy…Not easy watching ..
