What an excellent film! Sad, but in a melancholic way. Well written, well directed, well acted, with an interesting story/plot. With themes of love (or more accurately the absence of love), the hardness and difficulties of life (particularly that of native peoples in the late 20th century), and failed chances at redemption. It’s easy to see how Makwa was conditioned to become the sociopath he was.
Michael Greyeyes was incredible! I’ve seen him in film/tv before but I’m not sure in what specifically. I’m not sure why they needed Jesse Eisenberg and Kate Boswell. They were of course quite good but their performances didn’t really add anything to the film other than star power.
**Spoiler Alert** The scene with the priest meeting with a young Makwa implying that Makwa’s parents were alcoholics and abusive was painful. Then, in the classroom when the priest was lecturing the class about Cain and Abel and how Cain’s gifts to God weren’t good enough. Makwa and Tedd-O must be Cain and Abel, except that I don’t recall Abel ever striking Cain. Even the florist’s comment, “so you did a wrong and you need a little reparation.” Wow! I mean, Tedd-O had clearly been traumatized by the events surrounding poor Jimmy’s death but Makwa moved on, changed his name, and for all intents and purposes became somewhat of a success.
The scene with Jimmy’s mother was utterly disturbing. You really begin to hope Makwa gets caught. He’s caused so much pain to so many people.
I’ve always thought that ending a movie must be one of the more difficult aspects to adeptly pull off. This ending was interesting. The flashback to the Ojibwa man dying of smallpox. Was that supposed to be a metaphor for Makwa dying of shame, guilt, and his own pain?
Worth the watch!
