This is a tremendous, moving story, brilliantly illustrated with photos from across Canada of detainees, camps, and current remains. The tales of privation and suffering, passed down to Ukrainian descendants, are incredible, and tell of us ways both government in Canada and prejudiced citizens mistreated harmless people who had been invited to Canada one or two decades before to settle the land and ensure Canada was not absorbed into the United States. As author Semchuck points out, this is an object lesson we must not forget and that cannot be absolved simply by a government leader saying, "We're sorry."
