I don’t know if it’s because I’m British & West Indian or what but this is one of the cringiest films I’ve ever seen. Was so excited to see a black cast but oh dear. The acting was awful from most of the cast, not all. Some scenes were just unrealistic, predictable and silly. I couldn’t stand the Assistant/Sister Aretha, she was rude and awful. Cringe. It was like she was trying to ‘give British slang for American audience’. Every time she came on the screen I had to fight the urge to turn it off again. Couldn’t stand her. The whole movie was trying too hard to ‘give British & West Indian’ black culture. It was hard to watch because that specifically is my culture and it was just so forced and cringe. I can’t think of another word other than cringe and I really hate to say this. I wanted to love this movie so much. I didn’t mind the younger brother, Josh, he was pretty good & the main character Melvin of course, he was good too. One weird thing about the fiancée character, Lisa, she sounded like a Brit doing a bad American accent to me. I don’t know why, she’s actually American. I also loved Leigh-Ann’s singing, I knew she could sing but really didn’t realise she was so great. & don’t get me started about the cliché black men at the table. Lol the African, West Indian and geezer. Felt forced as well, but funny. I would like to say that it’s nice to see representation on screen, anywhere & I did feel that when Josh brought out the curry goat, we have the same pot at home lol. What West Indian home doesn’t ? Some of the older actors were good too but you could definitely tell it was some people’s first acting job. It wasn’t all bad. It had its funny and nice bits but majority of it was pretty hard to watch. Anyways, I had to turn off the film twice because it was so awful, but really wanted to give it another chance. It had potential & I wish I loved it but cringe, cringe, cringe, cringe, cringe, awful acting, cringe, cringe. Okay, that’s all.
