This movie quite boring. The story is about the same as Amy other boxing movie, i.e. the son wants to fight but the mother doesn't allow him to, etc.. and the movie drags on for almost three painful hours. Also, there is so much unnecessary forced politics in this movie, whether it be forcing members of some religious communities to be on screen at times. The movie excels in the setting and cast, though as it shows an accurate 1970s North Chennai and the characters are well constructed. It does show that the actors have worked hard to protest boxing as realistic as possible. But, if this movie was released in theaters, it likely would not have gotten so much reception, as it is too long and boring to keep regular audiences entertained. I hope Pa Ranjith makes movies with a new story, as he is a very capable director from movies like Attakaththi and Madras, and also stop forcing uneccessary political statements. If the movie has a mai point about politics, then it is fine, but for a movie about a rich tradition of Madras Boxing, it is hard to watch without getting annoyed.
Also. People are comparing this movie to Toofan. This movie is quite better than that, but there was a Hindi Boxing Movie Mary Mom which is better structured than this movie. Also, Tamil Movies like Booloham and Maan Karate about Boxing are also more entertaining and engaging than this movie. I honestly think a lot of these movie reviewers are paid to say this movie is so great, because this movie doesn't have much content wise that is different from standard boxing movies, apart from the 1970s feel and character development.
