I general, I thought this book was “OK”. The description of life as a nursein an army hospital was very well done. However, the fact that the woman Frankie was from a wealthy family, a debutante” was not believable on my opinion. I was a student nurse in the 1970s. Believe me, there were no wealthy debutants. Young women went into hospitals and cared for very sick people in training. I would believe it if Frankie were a working class or middle class girl whise brother had been drafted and died.
Also, the other characters in the novel were superficial and not well developed. For examoke, the married doctor she falls in love with. We are told how Frankie is conflicted, vut do not hear how Jamie us torn and anguished over his love for a nurse in the war and hus wife and kid back home. What was going on in HIS mind?
It was a good sentiment to tell the take of an Army nurse in Vietnam, a forgotten group. However, this bookwoukd have been better with more realistic and mire detailed character development.
