I expected it to be a bit corny and cheesy, but it was straight up offensive. This movie would’ve done better if it were released maybe 10-15 years ago; this kind of rhetoric is tired. I’m not really sure what the movie was trying to say besides “Black women who wear weaves are untrustworthy and insecure.”
The actors did a good job with the material that was given, and with such big names I would expect nothing less. Plus, the soundtrack is actually really good. But the movie itself suffers from trying to be what Jordan Peele has already done. It’s listed as a comedy but it’s not quite funny, and the scares aren’t really there either. The motive of the sentient weave is also unclear.
SPOILER:
They say the weaves want to take over the women who wear them, but there are several scenes where the weave will kill the wearers themselves. And when a weave wearer is being attacked by a weave, their weave won’t even fight back. Wouldn’t it make sense for the weave to want to protect the body it’s trying to possess? That really threw me out of the story.
END SPOILER
The ending also leaves much to be desired. It comes rapidly and doesn’t really do a good job of tying loose ends. Does nobody care that literal celebrities are going missing? Why are the weaves being made? What does slavery have to do with this?
Finally, they missed an extremely big opportunity to cast 2 Chains as The Hair Weave Killer lol
