A surprisingly nostalgic Superhero movie that almost falls into its predecessor’s mistake of becoming a CGI mess at the end, however it thankfully pulled itself back.
The opening 30 minutes remind of the Christopher Reeve era Superman and that’s certainly nothing that I’ll ever complain about.
Set in the 80’s it doesn’t fall into the trap of becoming stereotypical in its references and Gal Gadot lights up the screen every time she’s on it. An impressive support cast including Kirsten Wiig in her best role to date and Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor story has a satisfying ark worthy of the character’s return. Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord also pleased more than I feared he would and yes, whilst there’s one or two references to a certain outgoing leader of America, it never once became overbearing or preachy as I feared it may have.
Director Patty Jenkins has been vocal about her dismay at the film not getting a full cinematic release but one can only hope that she will be convinced to return should a third outing for Diana Prince get green lit.
Wait for the mid credit sting!!!
