The book despite featuring Cal prominently on the cover is more about Merrin developing a connection and eventual romance with one of the newer characters introduced in the book. The romance seems utterly pointless as Merrin and Cal develop a relationship in Jedi Survivor, making Merrin's romance in Battle Scars feel like LGBTQ pandering. The story is okay, not particularly groundbreaking, and only thing it does well is allow for each character in the Mantis crew to have their own moment to shine. Main antagonist of the book is the Fifth Brother, and we get more insight into his character besides him being another red lightsaber wielding Jedi killing pawn of Palpatine. Overall Battle Scars is an enjoyable but forgettable read only meant to build hype for Jedi Survivor.
