"A totally unique and immersive MCU movie accompanied by breathtaking visuals and an almost imperfect direction."
I've never started a review this way, but I have to say, FORGET THE BLOODY CRITICS! Honestly, I do not see why there is so much hate in this film because it's an improvement for Marvel for stepping out of their usual formula. Seriously, this movie is worth your time for enjoying at the big screen if you're a Marvel fan!
This movie had everything we couldn't see in the past MCU movies - there is diversity, a celebration of different cultures, outstanding cinematography and an ethereal score that fits perfectly to the genre. For those who were doubting, there is plenty of action sequences to keep us engaged, but also enthralled!
I wouldn't say this new take on a Marvel film is flawless because it did have its downsides, like its bland dialogue and sometimes uninteresting acting. I personally liked the time shifts between the story switching back and forth to the flashbacks and present day, because it was done seamlessly and felt connective to the overall story instead of being confusing. But the pace at times was much too sluggish; given more time where there had to be a faster pace and less time for the ones we wished we had explored more - like the arrival of the Eternals to earth, as I felt the movie could have dealt much more intimately with the audience to establish a strong impression on them as we meet them for the first time, but was hurried.
However, the most praiseworthy fact is that this movie though it introduces totally new characters to us, it indeed managed to let us connect with the characters! The emotions were definitely there during the intense situations and when the plot twists were revealed. Each character had unique backstories, motives and different character traits that made them thoroughly fleshed out, even the ones that had extremely limited screentime, like Ajak who now has become one of my favourite characters, alongside Thena, Makkari and Druig! And about Sersi, who could manipulate matter but values life much more is a strong and thoughtful choice for being the protagonist of this story.
I feel that every Marvel movie I've seen before has been driven by the plot, but unlike them, Eternals is a fresh new take and its character-driven narrative is a beautiful decision for the telling of a story that spans seven thousand years. Even if the plot is not your forte, the characters in it will make you believe otherwise and make you wish that you would see them team up in the future movies of the MCU. Speaking of which, I've never seen a more cliffhanging, mind-boggling, unexpected post-credits and end-credits scene in my life! Both were an absolute bang! But more of that to be left to you as you see what they are for yourself.
Eternals isn't the usual Marvel film we were expecting. It isn't actually a superhero movie either, but a love letter to humanity. It captures beautiful moments between the characters despite the fractured storytelling but did surprise us in many aspects both positively and negatively.
