Unfortunately, nearly all the 5-star reviews I have read are fakes :(
If you have actually read the books you will know that the show is not the Wheel of Time.
The show is ok. Not good, but not horrible if you have never read the books. For those that are fans of the book, you’ll be sorely disappointed.
The show has elements and some themes borrowed from the books, but it is an entirely different story. If you were going to change it so much, you should just call it a Wheel of Time Story. Some adjacent narrative to the source material. Like all the Star Wars one-offs, Rogue One a Star Wars story.
It wasn’t little variants to speed things up, or because it’s impossible to show certain things, it’s simply an absolute rewrite. A brand new story to which I am trying to keep an open mind. It’s hard to forget how badly the story has been butchered though. Particularly when you aren’t prepared going in.
The visuals, set details, etc are not up to par. As I read in one other review, it has
that all “too clean” feel to it. I’m pretty sure in one seen they used artificial grass that looked like putt-putt golf.
Highlights are some of the casting, the Myrrdraal, and trollocs. Particularly the Myrrdraal and trollocs.
I didn’t mind that some of the characters don’t fit the mold of the books. Thom Merrilin’s character for instance was not what is described in the books but I’m here for it.
They just abandon character development, important interactions that have long term consequence are ignored or changed. There’s added sexuality that they manage to do in a way that is not sexy at all.
It’s a show, it’s just not the show the title implies. Frankly, it’s not even a good show if you watch it without the background of knowing the books. My girlfriend finds it annoying and cheesy for example.
Ps don’t give credit to the showrunners for the feminism - that’s in the books. They upped it and took it an unnecessary sexist level rather than what was in the books but hey…
