This is without a doubt one of the most outwardly racist movies I have ever seen. I understand the undertones of being an old crotchety man who obviously has a deep misunderstanding of Asian people due to his traumatic past. But Clint Eastwood takes this role and makes me believe that it’s not just the character that is racist…The script, the acting, the characters are all atrocious. I see what the movie TRIED to accomplish and I see how it could have been potentially heartwarming but the constant flow of racial slurs is overwhelming even for a character that is supposed to be that racist. Take Django Unchained for example, great movie, still has a lot of racist characters but when they use slurs and offensive behaviours it makes sense not only with the plot but with the characters. That’s not excusing the behaviour of the characters but it makes sense considering the whole point of the movie. Gran Torino seems like it’s being racist just to *be* racist.
I have seen other reviews commenting on this movie saying that it’s a deeply Christian movie and I can’t agree more. This movie is white saviourism encapsulated into 2 awful hours. The old white man who is depicted as a strong manly war verteran, coming in and being the neighbourhood hero is so over the top they might as well beat you over the head with it. We get it, he’s a *manly* man. I also feel like not one person involved with the making of this movie actually consulted with a member of the Asian community that they are trying to depict. There are times in the movie where Eastwood’s character calls an entire family racial slurs directly to their faces and they all just nod and smile as if they have been dumbed down for the plot reliefs. Totally insulting.
This movie was a disaster from start to finish. Still couldn’t tell you what it was really about as it didn't seem to have much of a plot. I’m blown away at the ignorance of the positive reviews.
