Watching Sterling Hayden maneuver among a remarkable array of recognizable character actors. But the film is clumsy. It’s not Kubrick at his best by any measure.
There’s no character development, the plot is preposterous, and the orchestra just can’t shut up. The score is truly annoying as it drums and pounds through every scene, becoming absurd white noise after a point.
I guess “acting” in 1956 always looks campy in the 2000’s, but this is just laughable. “Killing” is supposed to refer to the killing of a thoroughbred, and/or the money stolen, but it should refer to killing time, which is what it appeared the cast was doing. No heart, no soul - no point in wasting your time.
