In a metaphor of the film itself, there was a better, prettier, more exciting version of the story hidden inside this film. The basic premise doesn’t work, why would Elizabeth Sparkles (Demi Moore, who at 61 remains a beautiful woman) take a substance from what looks like a crack den in order to bring forth Sue (Margaret Qualley) a version of her that, although younger is no more beautiful or accomplished than Moore and whose consciousness she doesn’t share. As my own daughter pointed out, why didn’t she just have a kid. Because Sue is a completely different, unconnected being (other than as a parasitic leach). There were lots of potential interesting angles that could have been explored, what would a 50 year old do with a body of 21 year old and how would you use your own 50 year old body if you knew that in 7 days you’d be stepping out in a shiny, tight, nubile version. How would your choices not be impacted by your lived experience? Instead Elizabeth got none of benefits and all of the consequences in a deal that no right minded woman would take and especially not if you already looked as good as Ms Moore. The acting was good, again Moore could have been put to better use and the scene where she is preparing to go out, shows the desperate ambition to achieve perfection and receive adoration, I would have liked to have seen more of this.
