I have a suggestion for anyone interested in watching this Walking Dead spin off. Do not watch it immediately after the original walking dead series. Wait a couple months or 1 - 2 years to help digest this spin off and what the writers may have been trying to accomplish.
The plot started off a bit too slow. This spin off is not really for adults! I think the writers wanted to create a fun, upbeat TWD spin off for teens, which parents would be okay with them watching. So maybe this is the reason for the painstaking slow build up to anyone actually being killed in a gruesome way, which isn't even shown in detail in season 1 along with (not sure if this is a spoiler alert): none of the teens actually being harmed in any way. The 2 main characters: Hope & Iris acting felt just a tad bit forced but I could really see that they were trying to make an effort, it just felt flat and didn't connect through the screen as with actors from the original or FTWD series.
In season 2, Hope & Iris appeared to me more comfortable with their acting/roles/characters so the performances were better. Season 2 also had more tense moments along with actual visuals on the killing, looks like the writers were listening to the complaints from fans. The last 2 episodes were best and Huck turned out to be my favourite character who was well cast for the role. She embodied it so well & showed the internal struggles she constantly faced having to make hard decisions. Elton was another favourite character for me. The last 2 minutes of the final epsiode was alittle confusing to me but overall a 7/10.
