As a Barbie-loving kid, this movie was pure perfection. The attention to detail created a space that drew me back to long hot summer days in Florida playing endlessly with my sisters as a child. It reminded me of watching my own daughter create storytelling through the dolls. I couldn't stop laughing at the attention paid to intricate details. When "Weird Barbie" showed up, I laughed until I cried. We had one! Her hair was crazy and my little sister chewed off her feet when she was 4.
My dad, a civil rights activist, gave me one of the first beautiful black Christie and Julia Nurse dolls. Even though I am of European descent, because they had dark eyes and hair like me, I thought I looked more like them than the blonde version. I wanted to work in a hospital like Julia, and ended up doing so as a non-accidental trauma interventionist. I am happy that Mattel has diversified Barbie to represent even more people like my niece with Down Syndrome.
Just relax and have a great time with this film. It is fun, thoughtful, crazy, silly, and touching at times. It is a super creative toy-based genre film.
