Yes, it's a bit like the rather trashy 1980's "Heavy Metal" (the poster was the best thing about that film), but also a fair amount of comparisons to 1980's "Twilight Zone" and Japanese anime would also bit apt :)
The stories do tend to be less cerebral than the ones in "Twilight Zone", however...
