Steven Universe, in my opinion, is the most important show I've ever watched. Like any show, it has its flaws, but overall it's my favorite show.
The first season is slow-paced, with most of the episodes just introducing characters and allowing the viewer to get to know them. It starts picking up about halfway through, which is where it really hooked me. The art style is simultaneously cute and beautiful. The backgrounds are amazing and it's only improved as the show went on. The characters each have their own aesthetic, and it all combines to create a visual masterpiece. It has funny, sad, heartwarming, intense, and wholesome episodes, so it never feels boring or stilted.
But what makes it the most important show I've ever watched? The way Rebecca Sugar tackles difficult subjects that are relevant to today. Steven Universe has dealt with gender identity, sexual harassment, abusive relationships, toxic people, homophobia, mental illness, the importance of communication/consent, loss and grief, and so much more. These topics are things that are difficult to talk about, but necessary for all ages to know. Young children learn to be open-minded about confusing topics. Tweens and teenagers sometimes credit the show for helping them find their identity. People struggling with mental illness/trauma can relate to certain characters, which leads to finding healthy coping mechanisms and solace in knowing they aren’t alone. And Rebecca does it all in a comforting manner nearly everyone can relate to.
Rebecca Sugar, and the rest of the Crewniverse, are geniuses. Steven Universe may be labeled as a kids show, but it’s certainly one all ages can enjoy.
