As a big fan of the Halloween franchise, it hurts to say how awful this movie was. I really enjoyed the last two movies David Gordon Green made, but I have NO idea what he was thinking with Halloween Ends. This movie is basically a romantic soap-opera with Michael Myers being a cameo in his own movie - first appearing an HOUR into the movie. Throughout the film, he is basically made into a parody of himself and reduced to a brittle old man. Green basically forgot about the whole "Laurie vs Myers" showdown the movies were building until the last 20 minutes of the movie. The final showdown was anti-climatic and disappointing, with the Halloween 2018 fight still being far superior to the mess Halloween Ends gave.
In Halloween Kills, Jamie Lee Curtis's character was in a hospital throughout the film. I stayed hopeful that Ends would do better as they are building to the finale. Nope. Laurie's character is wasted and forgotten as well, only being a cozy grandma? It's unfortunate to see how her arc ends - poorly written. Kylie Richards character Lindsey, was completely wasted to a Tarot reader with awful dialogue. I felt she had so much potential, but again, David Gordan Green ruined that. Allyson was highly irritating this movie, making poor decisions that are out of character; with her love interest Corey. Corey is probably the worst part about the movie. I understand the concept of passing the torch, but that should have been its own standalone movie rather than overtaking Halloween Ends. Largely, the movie focuses on Corey as the new "Michael Myers", with the OG Myers doing only 1 or 2 of the actual kills.
The soundtrack was okay; it was more rock and roll which was a surprising take (and not needed) but Carpenter still kills it with the soundtrack. Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, gave a strong performance; Rohan Campbell did great too, and loved James Jude Courtney - whenever he was actually on screen. The kills themselves were good, some creative but lacked any meaning given they weren't actually done by Myers. Unfortunately, that's about all the good things I can say about this movie. The dialogue was poor, it was poorly written story-wise, and it's a very character driven movie, that focuses on the wrong characters. I genuinely wanted to leave while watching this movie, and was happy when it ended.
This movie is an abomination to the Halloween Franchise, even Rob Zombie's movies are better than Ends and that says a lot. Shame on you Paul Brad Logan, Chris Bernier, Danny McBride, and David Gordon Green for giving the fans this trash.
