It's up and down, gets a little silly at times even within the realms of fiction but this is certainly compelling TV! No spoilers here but just see it through to the end for twist after twist in the final episode. I do hope there will be a season 2! It really is a terrific drama in that it's terrifying at times. The opening scene really does set the tone for the whole season, as shocking as it is.
I particularly like the random 'tv game show' type scenes that are thrown in to highlight the issues further. All round good TV with a message, albeit fictionalised throughout. I should mention the controversial 'chess board' scene. I agree wholeheartedly that the Holocaust was horrific enough without the need for fictional embelishment but I can at least see where the writers were maybe coming from with this. It could be a way of separating reality from this fictional adaptation. It could be a tool for 'summarising' the absolute abhorrent atrocities that happened, to show the viewer a short graphic scene to quickly evoke disgust and deep sadness in the audience and draw them into the nature of the drama. Saying that, I can see why many people say there is no need for such fiction when it was bad enough.
Overall... Must see TV.
