A strong cast consisting of Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton could easily lead you to believe that this will be an instant classic. Don’t be fooled! What starts off as a mildly interesting premise quickly descends into the ridiculous, with Harold encountering a plethora of implausibly kind people who are happy to share their weird and wonderful back stories with him, despite only meeting him seconds ago. There then follows an hour and a half of Harold turning into Bear Grylls, foraging for blackberries whilst followed by a crowd scene reminiscent of one from Ben Hur. By the time our hero reaches his destination, you’re past caring about his pilgrimage and left thinking that you’ve seen enough close-ups of Jim Broadbent’s bruised and broken trotters to last you a lifetime.
