Sappy. Everything’s sanitized and foreshadowed. The main young characters gave rosy cheeks, the oldsters all are salted & peppered.
Much of the cinematic story relies on images of pictures and old newspaper clippings - very recursive and self referencing.
The female lead is the only true actor that is subtle and accurate with feelings, gestures and words. The male lead is still more of an Eagle Scout than a grown man, supposedly in his 40’s or Kate 30’s. His dad, well, acting was more like a volunteer at dinner theater than paid actor on the big screen.
Even the great Bonnie Badelia, doesn’t ham it up but her hair! Overblown curls, colors and looking more like a wig for Dolly Parton or Cher in a concert than woman on a date.
Competent cinematography, beautiful sets, but the “hoarder’s house? Cleaner than lots of middle class homes, just stuffed with boxes and bags of plastic bottles. . .
. . . Like this movie empty, light and full of air.
