Christ alive what was that?
So let me get across here that, yes, I’m a massive genre fan. I devour 80s slasher films and horror in general. However, to take a brief interlude at this point. Jaws is my all time favourite film. My favourite film of the 90s was The Thin Red Line. I honestly believe that Mad Max Fury Road is the best film of the last thirty years. I love film noir, I love Hitchcock, Kurosowa, Capra and so on.
I am invested in film. I have been my whole life.
Let’s get back to this.
When I think to myself- it’s Friday night and I want to see one good old fashioned stupid kids go to the woods and get picked off in really unpleasant ways then that’s what I want to see. I’ve seen Midsommar- great film. It didn’t pretend to be an early 2000s cannibal hunt and destroy film. What the hell was this?
I actually kept watching because I thought it was going to change but no.
Now I know there are going to be those out there who are praising it for subverting the genre and blah blah. Please- shut up. When I watch Wrong Turn I know what I want to see. If I watched a Fast and Furious film that turned out to be about car finance I’d feel a little let down.
This was utter bonkers and not in any good sense of the word.
Why call it Wrong Turn- why link it to the past exploitative straight to video sequels. Actually I’d rather watch those again than have to endure this another time.
It was awful.
And there is the shame as it’s actually a well crafted movie. It’s way above its namesakes in cinematography, acting and direction.
Why didn’t they just call it something else?
I honestly might have rode with it then.
Wrong Turn- hell yeah it was.
