Aww, it was too dark for ya? Wasn't those happy-go-lucky Irish you know? Sorry, this was a hundred years ago. Just after a war. No Starbucks. No Nice Stuff. Isolation leads to psychosis. The characters had no way out. That leads to desperation. The second half illustrated the consequences of that. Ever read Shakespeare? Awful terrible things happen.
The movie was promoted as a comedy. But this is a classic TRAGEDY. Fatal flows lead to a terrible outcome. I learned that in ninth grade. What do they teach these kids today? That British Art House movies are feel-good movies? "Two Divorces and a Funeral and a Flaming Cold Comfort Farm"
