I understood the symbolism but found the entire film to be utterly boring. You don't need to make it into Lord of The Rings, but everything felt so boring. I felt like there wasn't any creativity in the writing and it stuck to the poem too rigidly. A lot of things felt gratuitous (compositions of people standing around) and pointless. You can still tell a story with symbolism in a more engaging way.
