Big fan of Kylie and will always be but I felt this was her weakest album. I knew something was up when they didn’t push up the album release date after Padam became a hit. I also had a feeling after the single Tension was released that these two singles were the only top tier wise tracks to be singles as the rest of the album fills like fillers or songs from her Disco album which are good but don’t fit well with Tension’s housey sound and Padam’s club chat vibe. The template for this album to me should have been the track Tension and Padam as they fit well with the visuals of her album art. Additionally I don’t feel this album is sequence well as there isn’t a track number 2 banger after Padam ends because I was waiting for something like the track Tension to push me into the next phase of the work.
Production is key!!! I never really saw Kylie as extremely pop but more so representing that Euro house, or deep house of an Ultra Nate (think “Twisted” by Ultra Nate by 4hero). Some of her best work are those unique songs like, Can’t Get You Out of My Head, Slow, Obsession, Spining Around like that real club housey stuff that’s got some merit and not the trance stuff which seems to be used more here on some of the filler songs. She could have benefited from working with producers of the likes of Scissor Sisters, Jamiroquai or Sam Sparro as I think they could have built off the templates of the tracks Padam and Tension and brought the apparent visual concept she was going for on her album cover of a red hot Mars party album that was alien but unique. Either way she is still unique and I can’t wait for the next era. 🥰
