I watched this movie yesterday with my partner and 2 friends! Let's just say it's quite emotional but beautifully written.
The depiction of anxiety was spot on in my opinion. It made me feel very seen... It reminded me of when I was younger and tackled feelings of anxiety.
SPOILER WARNING⚠️
During this film, Riley is going through a lot of hormonal changes as she grows into a young teenager. Pixar shows the sudden shift in her behavior by introducing different emotions. This film is easy enough for younger audiences to understand, while also being nostalgic for older audiences. I believe it's a good way to show what life as a teenager is really like.. the conflicting emotions that change Riley's behavior are very well done in my opinion.
The most emotional part for me was when Joy lost control of Riley. In turn, Anxiety is the predominant emotion. Riley begins to feel less joy..and I will admit, I really had to hold back tears when Joy said 'As you get older, you feel less joy..' that hit hard.. and when Riley started to feel only negative emotions.. If I was watching this at home, I would have cried so hard. I was trying not to cry my eyes out at the theatre.. 😭
Anyway, I really recommend Inside Out 2.
It really exceeded my expectations. I was worried they would portray her emotions in a kind of cringe way..which some might say they did... But it makes sense for this movie, as she is a teenager going through a lot of changes. I more felt embarrassed for Riley than anything else. I've been there, it can be hard to fit in while you go through so many life changes.
My friends and I give this movie a 10 outta 10! Well done Pixar.
