I saw an early release yesterday of “It End With Us” and unfortunately, I had high hopes for this movie. It was a let down for me. Some of that may be because it was PG-13…
I think this movie was a great opportunity to bring awareness to Domestic Violence relationship. But I don’t believe it did that.
Without giving too much away…
A lot of the more graphic scenes between Lily and Ryle were glossed over. Something I loved about this book was what a great job Colleen Hoover did with making you love Ryle with Lily and then allowing you do go through the heart break and confusion she felt as everything unfolded in their relationship. This movie took that away. They made it seem like all the instances where she was mistreated by him were REALLY accidents. They didn’t show how hard and confusing it was for her to take him back after every situation and how convincing a man that does that can be (You’ll see what I mean if you see the movie).
Another thing is some of the scenes were out of order! Things they said earlier in the book were put in later in the movie and vice versa.
Now, I know Colleen Hoover also mentioned that they changed a few things. Go check out an interview with her and see (Example: Instead of calling Atlas’ restaurant BIB’s it’s called ROOT). I was completely okay with this! But what was not mentioned, or at least I didn’t see or hear about it, was that there were also many things that were just removed!
-There is no roommate.
-There is no Devin.
-It is very loosely implied that she has her own apartment. You see her in it once. (Almost looks like she always lived with Ryle) So, this means, a lot of the parts in the book that took place in her apartment did not happen or were changed.
-They don’t talk a lot about how Ryle didn’t want a relationship.
-They didn’t do a good job emphasizing how important his job was to him.
-Her mother never moves to Boston.
-The part where she goes over to her mother’s house to confide in her and tell her that she’s pregnant is not there. I felt this was a powerful moment in the book (She was afraid her mother would try to convince her to stay with him and well… you all have read the book. 😂).
-She never hurt her ankle in the beginning.
-Her and Ryle labeled their relationship as “Friends” in the beginning instead of staying away from each other.
Now the overall movie itself: Away from it being a rendition of a book it was not great either. There was no chemistry between the adult actors. The flashbacks of her and Atlas had more chemistry, and that was not a lot. I feel like the majority of the movie feels like a lot of different moments just slapped together. It does not feel organic. There wasn’t a lot of content given to make it feel like these relationships build organically. Not even the relationship with Allysa and Lily felt real. We knew they were best friends but don’t see the relationship blossom from strangers to that. And this goes for her relationship with Ryle and her mom.
