'And now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds’
Oppenheimer is the best movie of 2023. Case closed, A TRUE MASTERPIECE. This is cinema at the absolute peak of it’s powers. It is terrifyingly, hauntingly beautiful.
I am so happy that Cillian Murphy finally gets his turn as the leading man in a Christopher Nolan film, and wow does he deliver. This is the sort of performance that is remembered long after the fact - utterly, utterly mesmerising as he puts in the performance of a lifetime. He is absolutely guaranteed to get an Oscar nomination, and it is going to take a monumental effort for someone to beat him to it.
That’s not to say he keeps all of the limelight for himself. Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. are more than able to match Murphy’s level, putting in performances of their own that will see them get their own Oscar nominations - particularly RDJ, who I’d be shocked if he’s beaten to Best Supporting Actor. As much as I love Iron Man, it’s brilliant to see him stretch his acting muscles again and deliver this sort of performance.
The entire cast is superb, from the aforementioned leads to other supporting roles from Matt Damon and Florence Pugh. You are locked in throughout. The comments coming out from the Oppenheimer press tour are not hyperbole - every single actor here is at the top of their game and puts everything they have into their role. Sensational stuff.
I am a huge Nolan fan, but this is noticeably different from his previous outings. The usual set piece spectacles are replaced by some of the best screenplay writing we’ve ever witnessed. The visuals are as stunning as ever, and the score from Ludwig Göransson.. wow. The tension just builds and builds up until that ultimate crescendo.
I don’t have a bad word to say. Each act is distinct and captivating in it’s own way. From the increasing pressure in act 1, to the wild moments of act 2, and the irrepressible character work in act 3.
Oppenheimer is everything it promised to be and more. Christopher Nolan and his cast are in a league of their own. We’re going to see double digit Oscar nominations and multiple wins for this picture. If you only see one film this year, it has to be Oppenheimer. No doubt whatsoever - 5 stars.
