What a let down. Spoilers ahead: A friend recommend this movie, major sci-fi fan, and he said it was “the best film he has ever seen”. This is not that. The plot is sloppy and forced. The dialogue was weak and lacked any substances. It was Avatar, matrix, Elysium, Chappie, District 9 repeated. Cheesy robot/AI plot ideas, robots watching other robots dance seductively, please. I find that idea to be such a cop out for writers and lacks any creatively and is very weak for what this movies was trying to be, much like district 9. I get it, the robots have human like character and desire but it is such a lame notion. Devalues the entire movie. Stick with the higher morality of the AI.
The massive build up for this movie, for this incredible weapon, and it fell short again and again. We never get to see this weapons true value to the world, only that “someday it will do something great” garbage. My biggest memory from this movie were characters asking where “mother” is 100’s of times, and people stuck behind doors. Where’s the door in the village? How do we open the door to get to the really big door that we have to find a way to open, trap the bad guys behind another door, quick, open the door, close the door, open a door to kill all the bad guys, stuck in a door while the big machines attacks, trapped behind another door that we conveniently can’t open all of a sudden, the end. The most effective antagonist in this movie are doors. Oh and where’s mother? Where she was the entire movie. Shocker. Should we mention the gigantic slow moving star destroyer that apparently catch’s everyone off guard, ALL the time…
Visually, yes, great, but on par with many other films. Acting, mediocre at best, choppy plot which lead to poor story telling. The attempt is there to draw the connection to humanity and AI, but it is a weak execution. Sooooo many better sci-fi films than this. Not even comparable to Dune part 1 and part 2 looks to be unreal. Movies like Dune are able to develop complex characters and a story with the striking visual and soundtrack as they all focus on supporting the story of the characters. This film, fell short of true character development due to the rushed storyline. They tried to open too many doors and needed to show off their AI barcode scanning tool from space. I feel people just wanted this film to be amazing, fortunately I’m glad I didn’t spend a dime to see it in a theatre.
