It’s rare I go into film in recent memory with no pretext and I’m so glad I did so with The Creator. Just got a Hulu account, was intrigued by the stunning minimalist art on the home page and pressed play. The euphoric visual style, punching sound design and superb world-building immediately evoked the style of sci-fi auteurs like Villanueve and Blomkamp and I was just hooked. Though some predictable genre tropes were on display, the sublime cobbling of cutting edge tech, brilliant performances and just enough unease with how this not-so-distant future informs our present, makes for a thrilling and thought-provoking experience. Of course, when I saw Gareth Edwards name fade in as the credits rolled, it all made sense.
