I will go through stretches in life, since first seeing this in 2009, where I watch this multiple times. The last time I did this I bawled my eyes out each time. There is something so cathartic about this movie; it touches a place in my emotional core that no other piece of art can reach. It is brilliant because it is absurd and surreal, but it’s not pretentious because it doesn’t take itself too serious. It’s funny, but it’s also painfully, deeply sad. I really think this is Philip Seymour Hoffman’s best performance, and that’s saying something considering he was an all-time talent.
This film is not for everyone...I don’t like everything Charlie Kaufman does, I thought “Anomalisa” was awful; but if you’re like me, this one will hit you right where it hurts and leave you a better human for it. I cannot recommend this movie enough.
