—SPOILER FREE— The 1st game was perfect. In part 2 the writers completely disregard part 1 and what the fans of part 1 would have appreciated probably for the sake of “their vision” that they obviously felt was more important than the fans, whatever direction the series seemed to have been headed, the tone of the first, the characters of the first, and even the resemblance of the characters. Joel and Ellie look nothing like Joel and Ellie. When I first saw them I found myself asking who are these people? Once I was able to at least ignore it enough to keep playing they skew your motivation by switching you back and forth between the good guy and the bad guy Trying to make the bad guy look like good vice versa, then they switch you back again so much you literally start to want your character to die and fail the task the game has given you to complete. In the begining you want your main character to succeed then out of nowhere you have to play as there enemy and are forced to fight against them or else you won’t see what happens. So as you trudge along for the sake of gameplay that they ripped off of part 1 to build their sad shack of a game on top of you realize theyre not only torturing your favorite characters but are making you be the one to do it. The Joel in part 2 is an incredibly dumbed down version of a guy who could maybe be Joel’s drunk uncle who had to many concussions from playing fooosball in the first. The mistakes he makes are so unrealistic. He doesn’t even consider that people might be after him after the events of part 1 by introducing himself name and all to complete strangers who appear out of nowhere with insignia patches? The Joel from part 1 would have had him and Ellie start going by different names immediately when they first got back to Jackson after part 1. The whole thing is very frustrating and confusing. The good thing about this game is the graphics are very good except even in that they changed the characters faces. The gameplay is good as far as action but that’s because the first was. The whole thing is almost not finishable. Very disappointing. When the fans are the ones who are paying, you should at least consider what it is they’d like to see in the writing. And if this was them doing that, then a different profession would probably suit em better.
I understand there are good reviews as well. I think a lot of this has to do with 1. people either not having played the first or not having played it in so long that they don’t quite remember the tone and characteristics of it and therefore don’t care where they take it? 2. Honestly, I would bet money that people involved in making the game and the business aspect of it have a large hand in writing player reviews. Think about it, it’s a business. 3. The graphics are very good, and if you have no opinion on any of the characters from the getgo and have little interest in the first, you might actually like it if you don’t mind playing against yourself in the way this game does that. 4. The first game is so good that some people probably associate the quality of the first into the second because it’s a series and the similarities in action and mechanics. 5. A few people do just disagree with me, although especially people who were payed to or have a vested interest in the game’s success... ;-)
