I stumbled upon May December. It’s my first Todd Haynes movie. The movie started with an expectation to unravel a suspense, but it was quite straightforward. It didn’t unfold any layers of the character Gracie except that she was controlling and insecure. Also I didn’t quite understand why her friends were so kind to her that they kept on ordering cakes to keep her busy rather confronting her to make her life better, it feels a little unrealistic. Even her husband Joe for that matter, he continued the marriage to save her from falling apart. I liked the ending though, she continued living as if nothing happened. People like to live in their fantasies to satisfy themselves. The actors did a great job. The location, the designs, the clothes, everything seemed quite perfect.
But it didn’t resonated with me, may be I didn’t understand it fully. Gracie was naive, that’s fine for me; but the people around her let her continue with her naïveté was unrealistic for me. But the movie left an important question whether Gracie married Joe to cover up her crime or she really loved Joe.
