Been a big FF fan since their early years. Hard for me to say but the last few records prior to “But here we are” lost a lot of what had made them so special. The combination of raw grittiness and heart, and a shifting tempo from sweet and sublime to hard and grungy had been sacrificed in favor of a seemingly endless stream of ‘epic’ rock screamos. Seemed like being a major international superstar had become more important to Dave Grohl than the humble singer-songwriter who had scribbled all those early rock masterpieces onto scraps of paper stuffed into denim jackets while touring with Nirvana and his early emanations of Foo Fighters.
Suffice it to say this new record changes all of that. So like his better early work is this sublime record, It could easily fit in somewhere between One by One and ESP&G.
Welcome back Brother Dave. So deeply sorry for the devastating loss of one of your closest friends and musical brothers. But it seems clear that Taylor was there by your side as you wrote this masterpiece out. And maybe somehow guided you through that pain back to who you really are.
Namaste 🙏
