I really enjoyed this, I binged it in one night and I think it’s a very interesting premise with similarities to Only Murders in the Building, but I did find it insufferable at the same time. Also it was produced by the Obamas?
Spoilers ahead.
First things to note, none of the characters are likeable. If I met any of them in real life I would have hated them. All of them. Dove is a soppy teenager who is horrible to everyone for no reason, and acts like she’s above the other two because “she’s a real journalist”. She is actually very smart and shows that throughout but very obviously if she communicated better some things would have been easier to solve. Also I didn’t like that she was upset about the Official Secrets act and being arrested for that but continuously broke into places?
Emmy is a slightly boring character to begin with, she’s very naive and idolises Dove but other than that she doesn’t have much background to go off other than that she’s a researcher. She slowly starts developing a romance with Shitpants, but it doesn’t amount to anything because she not only records his trauma dump to Teddy but then is an arse to him during the festival. Sean is interested in her too but she never does anything with him, and they make a point of “ooh he thinks you’re fit so he’ll only listen to you” but then he doesn’t listen to her reasoning.
Gilbert seems like a wet sock in the show, doesn’t want to cross boundaries, feels too over trusting, but I think in real life he’d actually be the best one to talk to. He doesn’t break into as many places as the other two, he becomes friends with Seamus and has ‘rules’ about what is ok. (These rules are just the law basically)
Seamus, Sean, the nuns and basically every other character aren’t likeable either; I found the morticians daughter to be the most entertaining out of the entire cast, but the issue is not with the acting but the writing. WRITE MORE LIKEABLE CHARACTERS PLEASE
I would have loved to have seen more between Mary the mortician and Dove. They kiss once, but there’s no actual closure and it seemed like them flirting was going to be a whole bigger deal than how it ended.
The plot was really interesting, three journalists in a small town making a documentary about the disappearance of 3 people in one night at a pagan festival 25 years ago. The interlinking between a known smuggler and Irish gangs, plus the sketchy nunnery on the island over. There’s a lot to get confused by, many red herrings and small twists that get more intertwined as the show goes on.
I really really enjoyed the soundtrack though, I’ve already downloaded it and listened to it on Spotify, it really captured the emotion of the scenes and was just good music all around.
All in all, if another season came out, I’d watch it. It doesn’t look like it’s set up for another season or what the storyline would be, so I’m happy for it to stay as one season. I would recommend you watch it, but it’s not brilliant.
